Drinking beers at café De Oranjerie for a century: "Everyone just feels very welcome"

Café De Oranjerie in Amsterdam's Haarlemmerbuurt recently celebrated its 100th anniversary with a weekend of festivities, including live music and community lunches. Established in 1926 as Café Passage, the iconic venue is currently operated by Rein and Yannick Langereis, who have focused on maintaining the bar's historic, authentic charm. The interior remains largely unchanged, featuring a classic dark aesthetic that locals have cherished for generations.

The café is known for its welcoming atmosphere, where a diverse mix of neighborhood residents gathers regularly. Longtime employee Leo Carillho has helped define the experience by expanding the food menu, while patrons like Marnix enjoy personal touches such as custom-engraved glasses and dedicated seating. During the centennial celebrations, a statue of Queen Wilhelmina was unveiled above the entrance to honor the bar's long-standing place in the local community. The owners continue to prioritize the unique, home-like environment that has made the establishment a neighborhood fixture for a full century.
