New tram stops for line 26, now extends to Strandeiland

Tram line 26 in Amsterdam has officially extended its route by two kilometers into the IJburg area, adding three new stops at Centrumeiland, Buiteneilandlaan, and Franz Kafkasstraat. The extension now allows passengers to travel from Amsterdam Central Station to the new terminal at Franz Kafkasstraat in under twenty-five minutes. Although the project was delayed from its initial December completion date due to power supply issues, the line is now fully operational for residents and commuters heading toward the developing Strandeiland neighborhood.

While the municipality expects the area to eventually house over 20,000 people, current ridership remains low as construction continues. The expansion has drawn interest from transit enthusiasts, though some local residents have expressed concerns regarding the reliability of the line. Because many commuters rely heavily on this single transit artery, critics fear that lengthening the route could exacerbate existing vulnerability to service disruptions, leaving travelers with few alternative transportation options.
