Tenants of moldy homes confront landlord Eigen Haard: "It's been going on since 1999"

Tenants from twenty-one rental homes on Van Gilsestraat and Burgemeester Eliasstraat in Amsterdam recently confronted their landlord, the housing corporation Eigen Haard, regarding persistent mold issues in their properties. Many residents claim to have suffered from these unhealthy living conditions for years, with one tenant reporting a recurring black mold problem dating back to 1999. Accompanied by members of the Socialist Party, the group presented a book of photos and personal accounts to management at the company's headquarters to demand immediate intervention.

Following the protest, Annelinda van Dijck-van Eck, a director at Eigen Haard, acknowledged the severity of the situation and apologized to the tenants, stating that the conditions described do not meet the company's housing standards. The corporation committed to drafting a comprehensive plan to resolve the structural mold issues by the end of the year. Additionally, management promised to hold a formal meeting with the residents to discuss the neighborhood's future, a outcome which the tenant representatives described as a successful and necessary step toward improving their living health.
