Local residents demand safer Klaprozenweg after two fatal accidents: 'I saw someone under a car recently'

Residents of the Klaprozenweg in Amsterdam are demanding urgent safety improvements following two fatal accidents involving a bus within the last year. Local activists, led by Gus van Oppen, presented a petition signed by over 1,900 people to Alderman Elise Moeskops, citing the dangerous nature of the crossing at the Draaierweg. Residents report that vehicles frequently exceed the 50 km/h speed limit, creating a hazardous environment for children and cyclists. Many neighbors expressed fear for their families, noting they often take extra precautions or accompany children to ensure they cross safely.

In response to the petition, Alderman Moeskops acknowledged the gravity of the situation and promised to investigate immediate measures to increase road safety. The municipality has already planned to transform the crossing into a full intersection equipped with traffic lights by 2027 to help manage traffic flow and speed. While residents recognize that a permanent infrastructure change cannot happen overnight, they feel encouraged that their concerns are being addressed through ongoing dialogue with city officials.
