Dutch fine of 5 million euros for Swiss bank UBS for assisting tax evaders

The Dutch Public Prosecution Service has imposed a 5 million euro fine on the Swiss bank UBS. This penalty follows an investigation into Credit Suisse, a bank acquired by UBS in 2023, regarding its involvement in facilitating tax evasion. Between 2005 and 2015, the institution reportedly assisted twelve clients in submitting eighty fraudulent tax returns by hiding assets from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. To conceal these funds, the bank allegedly used methods such as holding client mail, opening numbered accounts, utilizing codenames, and establishing offshore companies in jurisdictions that do not share fiscal information with the Netherlands. The criminal investigation, which began in 2016, focused on the bank's corporate actions rather than individual employees, as those involved in the country primarily played administrative roles. The fine concludes a significant legal case regarding the bank's role in helping clients circumvent local tax reporting requirements for nearly a decade.
