Henk Schiffmacher's team tattoos Rembrandt on Bo's back: "The perfect back"

Tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher is tattooing a recreation of Rembrandt's 1633 etching, The Descent from the Cross, onto the back of Bo Kwakernaak. The project coincides with an upcoming collaboration at the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam, where Schiffmacher will offer similar tattoos to museum visitors.

Tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher is collaborating with the Rembrandt House Museum to bring classical art to the skin. To celebrate an upcoming special exhibit, his team is tattooing an intricate recreation of Rembrandt's 1633 etching, The Descent from the Cross, onto the back of Bo Kwakernaak. Kwakernaak was selected from fifty applicants for his suitable skin, which met strict requirements regarding physical build and markings. The complex piece requires approximately twenty hours of work spread across several sessions.

Schiffmacher chose this specific Rembrandt work because its composition is uniquely well-suited for the anatomy of a human back. The final details of the tattoo are scheduled to be completed on November 7 during the museum's Museumnacht event. Starting in late October, the artist will temporarily relocate his work from his private studio on the Ceintuurbaan to the museum, where visitors will have the opportunity to receive their own Rembrandt-inspired tattoos over the course of two weeks.
