Amsterdam is the most popular city for young people leaving their parental home

According to Statistics Netherlands, over 174,000 young people between the ages of 18 and 30 moved out of their parents' homes in 2024. Amsterdam emerged as the most popular city for these individuals, welcoming 12,760 new residents, followed by Rotterdam and Groningen. While students made up nearly one-third of those moving out, the data highlights significant differences in housing choices and age based on education level and employment status.

Students typically move out between the ages of 21 and 23, with many opting for the private rental market or shared living arrangements. In contrast, non-students tend to leave home at an older average age of 25.3 years and are significantly more likely to purchase their own property. Interestingly, vocational students were found to be more likely to buy a home or live alone compared to their counterparts in higher education, possibly due to higher participation in the workforce during their studies.
