Catering at swimming pools and campsites struggling with flies in the kitchen

Recent inspections by the NVWA found that nearly half of hospitality venues at campsites and swimming pools in the Netherlands struggled with fly infestations during the hot summer. Additionally, over 25 percent of these businesses failed to maintain proper food storage temperatures, leading to 88 warnings and eight fines.
During the record-breaking warm summer, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) conducted inspections at various hospitality locations, including camping restaurants and swimming pool eateries. The findings revealed that nearly half of the 154 establishments inspected faced issues with flies in their kitchens, with three percent suffering from severe infestations. Furthermore, more than one in four businesses failed to maintain proper food storage temperatures, such as keeping salad bars adequately chilled. Over a quarter of the establishments were cited for failing to implement necessary pest control measures like screens or traps.
Following these inspections, the authority issued 88 official warnings and imposed eight fines on non-compliant operators. These lapses in hygiene and temperature control were more prevalent during the peak summer heat compared to the cooler months earlier in the year. To ensure improvements, the NVWA has announced that it will conduct follow-up inspections at these facilities within three months to verify that health and safety standards are being met.
